Empowered Women, Empowering Communities

Celebrating the Women of CASTO This International Women’s Day

March 6, 2025

At CASTO, we believe in empowering and uplifting the incredible women who drive our success every day. International Women’s Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, is not just a time to recognize their achievements—it’s an opportunity to reflect on the progress we’ve made, acknowledge the challenges that still exist, and champion a future where all women have the opportunity to thrive.

To honor this day, we’re spotlighting the voices of some of the most influential women at CASTO who make a difference in our company and our communities. They share their experiences, insights, and hopes for the future—offering a powerful perspective on what it means to be a woman in today’s world.

Jennifer Knapke – Residential Operations Manager | Residential Property Management

Can you tell us a little about your career journey and what inspired you to pursue your current role?

I began my career in property management in 2003. When I returned to Columbus in 2004, I was hired as an Assistant Manager at a CASTO community. I spent 6 years in that role, then was promoted to Property Manager in 2010. I enjoyed my time on-site working with a team, but when the opportunity presented itself, I accepted an Operations role at the corporate office. My current role is a great fit for my skillset. It requires constant communication, organization and collaboration with other team members.

Have you had any mentors or role models who have helped you along your career path? If so, how did they impact you?

Yes. CASTO’s SVP of Human Resources and Operations has been a constant support and mentor for me since I began my career at the corporate office. She has guided me through crucial conversations with associates and team members, offered an impartial perspective on work-related scenarios as well as been a sounding board for my ideas. We are so fortunate to have a leader that prioritizes the well-being of associates and dedicates time to ensure our success.

What advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter your field?

Property Management is a fast-paced career choice of challenges, triumphs and rewards.

Sydney Federer | Senior Leasing Director & Principal Broker

Can you tell us a little about your career journey and what inspired you to pursue your current role?

After graduating from college with a degree in Communications, I knew I wanted to pursue a career focused on building interpersonal relationships, networking, and positively impacting my community. Although I recognized that the commercial real estate industry had a higher barrier to entry, including a commission-based income structure, I was drawn to its high-risk, high-reward nature. Eager to take on a challenge right out of college, I was excited to dive into this opportunity and gain hands-on experience.

Have you had any mentors or role models who have helped you along your career path? If so, how did they impact you?

When I felt truly lost and unsure of my path, I returned to my core values- practicing honest, vulnerable, and open communication with colleagues and individuals I felt I could trust. While I certainly made mistakes along the way, those risks led to life-long friendships and industry mentors who helped shaped me into the professional I aimed to be. I continue to rely on these relationships and have built a business network I’m proud of. Now, I’m grateful to give back by offering a listening ear or sharing advice to those looking for similar guidance and support. This act of giving back has become one of the most rewarding aspects of my career, and I enjoy meeting new people looking to enter the industry.

What advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter your field?

Go for it. Do the work. And most importantly, be authentically yourself. You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, so take the shot and see where it leads you.

Ana Morera – Regional Manager | Residential Property Management

Can you tell us a little about your career journey and what inspired you to pursue your current role?

I started leasing apartments during my last year in college and I really enjoyed the interaction with people and helping them find their home. After working with CASTO for 6 years as a Property Manager, I transitioned to the role I currently have as a Regional Manager. I can honestly say that I did not know the degree of learning I would undertake in this role. It includes managing people, aligning property specific budgetary goals, teamwork, and learning new processes to continue to be successful in our industry. I don’t have one-on-one contact with residents as much, but I work more closely with our associates to meet our goals as an organization.

Have you had any mentors or role models who have helped you along your career path? If so, how did they impact you?

My mother was a role model to me in the development of my career.  She had a strong work ethic and was also a very caring and compassionate person who helped shape me in life.

What advice would you give to young women aspiring to enter your field?

Be confident in your skills and advocate for yourself, assert yourself, find mentors and allies, keep learning, be open to others’ ideas and experiences and lift other women up and help mentor them. Lastly make your career a priority in your life but find the right work-life balance.
